Switchgears are electrically disconnected switches that are used to protect, control, regulate and isolate electrical equipment’s from damage from overpowering or less power fluctuations in Power Transmission and Distribution networks.
Switchgear Monitoring System also known as Switchgear Condition Monitoring system is a set of equipment’s used to monitor, diagnose, and control the condition of switchgears and detect any defects in them. These are composed of components such as partial discharge sensors, instruments, and diagnostic software to observe the condition and current working of switchgears online to prohibit possible failure of switchgear system which may cause unwanted power outages.
Some benefits which these systems offer include avoiding unplanned outages, reducing industrial downtimes, reducing repair costs through improved failure detection, improving switchgear availability, cost-effectiveness, and proactive maintenance strategy.
The global switchgear monitoring system market size is anticipated to cross USD 4.2 billion by 2032, at a CAGR of around 14.5%, from an estimated USD 1.8 billion in 2022.
Switchgear Monitoring Systems Market Drivers
The growth of this market is attributed towards major pertaining factors including; the rising demand for secured electrical transmission and distribution systems, the increasing demand for continuous monitoring of switchgear across various industry verticals, the rising investments for efficient and reliable renewable energy and in T&D networks for upgrading the aging infrastructure, the rapid expansion of power plants and transmission lines to meet the growing electricity need, the increasing awareness about importance of Switchgear Monitoring Systems and the growing demand to safeguard and secure electricity grid distribution systems among energy etc.
Additionally, switchgear monitoring systems help prevent the leakage of SF6 gas, which is considered to be a major greenhouse gas. This makes them eco-friendly and also immensely desirable in various industry verticals. Alongside, benefits such as product compactness, safe operation, and economical costs offered by the switchgear monitoring systems enhance the growth of the overall market considerably.
Moreover, the manufacturing and service industry along with major government and public agencies depend on real time data analysis and rely on continuous supply of power from electric utilities to ensure continuous and efficient working of their electrically powered equipment’s. This makes switchgears one of the most important equipment in complete power distribution setup which needs proper monitoring to avoid failures and hefty damages. This propels the demand for switchgear monitoring systems and boosts their global market growth.
Furthermore, other factors such as the growth of data centers, execution of performance-based incentive systems and definite service programs, the increasing focus towards maximizing reliability of electrical assets through early detection of failure, the growing demand for retrofitting of existing electrical network in line with regulatory and fiscal reorganization across the large-scale industries and the rising inclination towards the advancement of prevailing grid infrastructure across developed nations will further propel the market growth.
However, high capital requirement for installing switchgear monitoring systems, stringent environmental and safety regulations for SF6 switchgears, increased reliability and quality assurance by switchgear manufacturers, onsite inspection and maintenance services provided by various power distributors and complexity in the timely detection of abnormal temperature rise in switchgears restrain the growth of this market.
